Origin balances weight and portability with ample support and protection, so you can save your energy on the walk-in yet still push yourself on the project.
- 11cm foam sandwich cushions fall and prevents bottoming out
- Taco design is better for uneven landings with no central fold
- Reverse folding closure provides a flatter, more stable landing surface
Origin opens to a mid-sized 134cm x 100cm pad area with a taco-style fold. Taco mats are better for uneven surfaces as the uninterrupted landing zone means you don't have to worry about losing an ankle down a fold. The 'reverse taco' system folds with the firmer landing side on the outside to stop your pad from rocking on uneven ground.
We've used two different layers of foam: a 7cm layer of open cell foam to absorb impacts; and a 4cm layer of closed cell foam to spread your weight across the pad so you don't bottom out (hit the ground through your pad). Our foam is also cross-linked, a fancy molecule-bonding process which makes it more shock absorbent and resistant to repeated compressions.
This foam lives in a super abrasion-resistant 1100D Cordura® outer cover with a DWR coating to help it endure the rocky nature of being a bouldering pad. All mat covers are sewn and reinforced with bar tack stitching in our UK Factory next door, and come with a 25-year Alpine Bond.
Origin has 3 carrying configurations for comfort on even the most scenic of walk-ins! The removable rucksack straps and waist belt are on the landing side to preserve the life of your foam and stop you getting a muddy back when you fold it up to carry. The rucksack straps also double as a shoulder strap for hanging on another pad or boulder hopping. You’ve also got side grab handles for shifting your pad into position.

How It Is Made
Reducing Fabric Wastage
Our bouldering mat panels are cut to keep fabric waste to the absolute minimum. We also recycle as much scrap fabric as we can into brand new products.
Where It Is Made
Our products are made in the best factories in the world. We know the factories personally and they have all signed up to our Code of Ethics in our supply chain. This includes the Ethical Trading Initiative base code, fair pay, safe working environments, no child labour, no modern slavery, no bribery or corruption, no materials from conflict zones and humane farming methods.
All our factories sign up to our Code of Conduct. Find out where we make our product by visiting our Factories of Alpkit factory zone.
Reducing our carbon footprint
We are carbon neutral under PAS2060 and offset our Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 operations and transport emissions. We recognise that offsetting is not part of the solution but a point to pass through on a journey to Net Zero. Carbon Neutral is just a step in that journey.
We have joined the Science Based Targets Initiative which sets independent targets for us to achieve to do our bit to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Our targets are to halve our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2025 based on 2018 base year and reduce our total carbon intesnity by 15% every year to achieve genuine net zero by 2050.
