Alpkit Foundation supports Blind Veterans UK with tools that help them experience the outdoors, proving that sight is only one way to see the world.

The Alpkit Foundation is delighted to support Blind Veterans UK, a national charity that works with blind ex-Service men and women. They support the veterans through adjusting and overcoming the challenges of blindness whilst enjoying everyday life. They also provide training, rehabilitation and a safe and happy home. The charity is hosting the 100k in 24 hours event, to mark their 100 years of service. Anyone can enter the event, which will take participants through some of the most picturesque parts of the UK. A team of 4 blind veterans (former RAF, Royal Navy and the British Army members) would like to enter the event, happening in Yorkshire this June.

Mark, the Activity Team Leader for Blind Veterans UK explains why the event is so important. “Our motto at Blind Veterans UK is ‘life beyond sight loss’. We actively push our members to challenge their sight loss and take them out of the comfort zone in order for them to recognise that they can still take part in these events and play an active part in society. It will build confidence, self-worth and helps promote independence. The skills and experiences gained by taking part in these events helps them overcome challenges in their daily lives. Being back in a team environment and working for each other is part of the military ethos they all still have, and drives them on to do more.”

The team would like help from the Alpkit Foundation as although the charity is organising the event, they are not supporting the members financially to take part. Training is provided, but the members and guides are having to pay their own entry fees and equipment. The Alpkit Foundation will provide head torches and technical gear to the 4 participants. The members of the team will greatly benefit from taking part as it is a huge personal challenge. It will also show other blind veterans what can be achieved, inspiring and encouraging future events to take place.
