    Big Shakeout School of Adventure

    Beginner Caving

    £75

Take your first underground steps into a Peak District cave system and learn about its creation over 300 million years. Discover beautiful formations and fossils, plus evidence of mining dating back centuries, through vast chambers, roaring waterfalls and serpentine passages.

Our Beginner Caving Day offers an ideal first taste of underground adventure. You’ll visit up to two local cave systems over 2-3 hours each, mostly walking-sized with some stooping or hands-and-knees crawling, and the challenge is tailored to you on the day. Before setting out you’ll be kitted out with an over-suit, wellies, kneepads, helmet and lamp, and your guide will check the weather and plan the safest route underground. Curious what a day like this actually feels like? Read Caving into Pressure.

Enjoyed the taste of it? Adventure Caving takes you deeper, with abseils and ladders.
