In 2020, we committed to the Science Based Targets initiative — a globally recognised framework that helps companies align their carbon reduction efforts with what science says is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
The target, validated by SBTi in line with their streamlined process for small businesses was to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 46% by 2030. That’s direct emissions (from things like electricity and heating) and indirect emissions from the energy we use.
We’re proud to say we’ve done it. Eight years ahead of schedule.
How we did it
We didn’t buy our way out with offsets or fancy accounting. We focused on cutting actual emissions at the source. That meant:
-
Switching all our UK stores and HQ to 100% renewable electricity
-
Cutting gas use across our buildings
-
Improving efficiency in our logistics and operations
-
Rolling out sustainability standards to our suppliers
-
Embedding climate action into every team, not just one department
It’s not about perfection. It’s about momentum. And this is just the start.
Where we go from here
This milestone is a big one, but it only covers Scope 1 and 2. The lion’s share of our footprint — over 95% — comes from Scope 3: the emissions linked to making, transporting, using and disposing of our products.
So that’s where our attention turns next. We’re:
-
Mapping our full Scope 3 impact in detail and reduce first
-
Working on product circularity: repair, reuse, recycle
-
Choosing lower-impact materials and shortening supply chains
-
Designing gear that lasts a lifetime, not just a season
This isn’t just a climate win — it’s a commitment to doing things better. And we’ll keep pushing. Because adventure needs a thriving planet.
