The updated El Camino arrives with refinements that make it even more capable for the adventures that matter most: multi-day bikepacking tours, ambitious day rides into unfamiliar territory, and those after-work blasts when you want maximum fun in minimum time.

At its heart remains the same philosophy that made the original Camino Cycling Weekly's 2024 Gravel Bike of the Year, Adventure Bike of the Year, and Overall Bike of the Year: this is a gravel bike first, which happens to have a motor. Not an e-bike trying to be a gravel bike.

The El Camino's 250Wh battery integrated into the downtube delivers genuine versatility. Want a powerful 20km blast on technical terrain? Full power available. Planning a 70km mixed-surface adventure? Low power stretches that range impressively. Add the optional range extender and you're looking at up to 120km of assisted riding – enough for serious multi-day touring.

That range extender proves its worth on longer adventures. It fits into a standard bottle cage mount and charges separately in just 3 hours, meaning you can take it into cafés or campsites while the main battery stays in the bike. The main battery itself also charges in 3 hours, making overnight stops straightforward for tour planning.

The 250W rear hub motor delivers 38Nm of torque through three power modes you select via chunky new control blips on the handlebars. These redesigned controls work reliably with cold, wet, and gloved hands. With a bar mounted display for the flat bar and an out-front display for drop bars it keeps you informed of speed, power output, and battery level at a glance.

Rides like a real gravel bike

Here's what separates the El Camino from heavier e-bikes: at just 3kg more than the non-electric Camino, it's genuinely light enough to lift over a locked gate, load onto a roof rack, or carry up stairs to your accommodation. That modest weight penalty means you're riding a proper gravel bike, not wrestling with a battery on wheels.

More importantly, the El Camino rolls freely above the 25km/h assistance limit, feeling like a normal bike rather than dragging against invisible resistance. This comes down to the motor's use of hall sensors rather than regular magnetic sensors. Those magnetic sensors in some e-bikes create noticeable drag above the assistance level, effectively forcing you to ride at exactly 25km/h to feel the benefit – which uses more battery. Hall sensors eliminate that drag, meaning you can comfortably ride faster when the terrain allows, conserving battery for when you actually need assistance.

The result? A bike that feels natural whether the motor is working hard, helping subtly, or switched off completely.

The thru-axle rear hub motor design uses a standard 12mm thru-axle and allows for a UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) dropout.
