Alpkit Foundation Celebrates 10 Years of Opening Up the Outdoors

By Kenny Stocker

A Milestone anniversary marks £1 million donated to over 3,000 projects connecting people with nature

The Alpkit Foundation is celebrating a remarkable 10-year journey supporting grassroots projects that help people access and enjoy the outdoors. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over £1 million to more than 3,000 initiatives across the UK, reviewing applications from over 10,000 groups and individuals passionate about breaking down barriers to outdoor experiences.

"When the opportunity to become a Trustee arose I saw it as a privilege to be able to help. Scanning through reports we receive back from funded projects it's clear tha Alpkit Foundation support can help young people have potentially life changing experiences in the outdoors. Whether it is a one-off, or assistance for a more long term sustainable scheme, I'm proud to be involved." - Adge Last Foundation Trustee

The Foundation's approach focuses on small awards that support direct action, helping community groups that often fall outside traditional funding requirements. As Yvonne Witter MBE of Peak District Mosaic notes: "One real positive aspect to the Alpkit Foundation is that the process allows community groups that would ordinarily fall outside of other funding body requirements to access grants. This can really help open up opportunities to connect more with the outdoors."

A Milestone Year

2025 has been particularly significant, with the Foundation crossing the £1 million mark and receiving a generous £50,000 donation from Challenge Cancer through Adventure. The Foundation now reviews 300-400 applications at each bi-monthly meeting, highlighting the growing recognition of outdoor experiences' importance.

Beyond grant-making, the Foundation's Continuum project has diverted over 3 tonnes of end-of-life wetsuits for recycling, 3 tonnes of down to RE:Down, and approximately 1,000 sleeping bags to homeless support organizations including ShelterSuitUK.

Looking ahead, the Foundation remains focused on addressing challenges around access, inclusion, diversity, and education. While we're excited by what's happened, we're more excited about what the next ten years will bring.

Go nice places, do good things. Now that's a joy everyone should be able to share.

Groups seeking support can apply, while supporters can contribute through direct donations or by choosing the Alpkit Foundation as a 1% For the Planet partner.
