Santiago knows its heritage; cold-worked, air hardened steel is steeped in the history of long distance riding. But with bang up-to-date geometry, Santiago has a refreshing feel that you know will be good for years to come: 450 mm chainstays, 1.1 m wheelbase, 71 degree head angle, a fork rake of 55 and generous tyre clearance. This makes for a truly comfortable, fast, assured bike, both in its own right (audax slaying, winter riding) or when racked up for multi-month adventures.

Rival22 Touring

If you’re touring fully-loaded, you’re going to want the FSA super compact 48/32 chainset with an 11 – 36 cassette at the back. With big wide gear ratios (ranging from 0.89:1 to 4.36:1) it’ll get you up Winnat’s Pass fully-loaded without taking too much off your top speed, so you’ll still be spinning it out at 30 mph pretty comfortably. In old money, the gear ratio is 23 to 109 which is gives a huge range of gears for load carrying and makes for a very comfortable ride. So it is important to avoid cross-chaining when riding. Cross-chaining on any bike puts stress on the drivetrain and can cause premature wear of the components. The rule of thumb to follow is that when on the big ring, only use the smaller two-thirds of the cassette. When on the inner ring, only use the inner two-thirds. With an 11-36 cassette, it is not possible to use the larger two cogs on the rear cassette when in the big chainring - please get in touch with the Sonder team to swap to for an 11 to 32 rear cassette if you prefer.

Geometry and Sizing

Sizing

It is important to get the right size bike, if the bike fits it will be faster, more comfortable, and easier to handle. You can also take into consideration the standover height to ensure you pick a bike that will be a good fit. If you measure your inside leg and ensure there is a minimum of an inch from the top tube to your crotch this will give you enough seat post adjustment to find your optimum saddle height. Generally we recommend:
Small
Riders between 5ft 2in and 5ft 7in
Medium
Riders between 5ft 6in and 5ft 10in

Features

Reynolds 631 steel tubing

Durable, smooth and assured on those multi-month trips Reynolds 631 steel is an excellent material for round-the-world touring where you’re completely dependent on your bike. We’d be surprised if you needed to get your frame repaired, but it’s comforting to know that finding a steel welder in the middle of nowhere is far easier than getting your alloy frame repaired.

Traditional bike, contemporary geometry

Santiago’s takes classic road bike geometry as a starting point, with a longer wheelbase and higher stack height for a more comfortable riding position and assured ride, whether you’re travelling light or fully loaded up.

Generous tyre clearance

Clearance for up to 650b x 47 mm or 700c x 37 mm tyres that make your ride more comfortable and give better grip on the bitumen as you corner.

Full traditional mounts

With full rack and guard mountains, 3 sets of bottle cage bosses and extra cage mounts on the fork, Santiago can handle being fully loaded up.
