After returning from the Alps for the winter I was at a bit of a loose end as I didn’t really know where to go next. I’ve spent the past 8 years living the life of a seasonnaire, including 3 years of uni. I’ve therefore never really had a ‘proper job’ and with family and friends telling me to get a grip and stop galavanting around I thought it was about time I did just that! I worked within hospitality in the winter and at outdoor centres during the summer. Alpkit seemed to appeal to me as the ideal place to work particularly within customer service, combining the two perfectly, but all year round!
After applying and attending an interview (sorry I was a bit late!) to my delight, they kindly offered me the job! Thanks guys!! Everyone was super nice and welcoming to me... although they hadn’t had the delight of my music choices just yet!
It was a bit confusing at first, all the different systems in place etc - also, it turns out switching on a mac is harder than it looks! As I’ve never had an admin role before, it was all a bit daunting. Thankfully, my experience in hospitality came up trumps and I soon learned the ropes (though the odd mistake is still made..). Working within the outdoors really helped too, as I can relate to our customers to give the best possible advise. I’m officially a sailing, kayaking and mountain bike instructor (but my riding skills are highly debatable..!) I’ve worked in the Alps helping lead climbing sessions too - so although I’m no expert, this experience really helps with any specialist questions customers may have. My true love though has to be the snow. Nothing beats walking to work in -40 degrees, as I found out whilst living in Canada! Working at Alpkit is great, as the brand appeals to a variety of activities and people, allowing my previous experience and knowledge to come in to practice.
Though I’ve only been here for just over a month, I have already learnt plenty of new tricks! The atmosphere is super relaxed (provided all the work gets done!) and a good ol’ brew is never far from hand! No two days are really the same - whether it's helping out in the warehouse or dressing up (today is Hawaiian Friday!) fun as always at Alpkit HQ!
