Plans are afoot to open a new Alpkit and Sonder store in the North East of England. It is super exciting, and has already had us thumbing our copies of Northumberland Bouldering, scouting for bridleways and checking tide tables over lunch.
Just off the A1 the store will be a spring board to most of the outdoor activity we know and love. Within an hours drive there is easy access to the North Pennines and the Northumberland National Park, not to mention the dramatic east coast coastline.
As with our other stores we are planning to run courses and activities from the store - rides, runs, birdwatching? we will if we can find someone willing to run it!
Fancy a ride on your bike? Nip over to the Kielder Forest - one of the top dark sky zones in the country, and home to miles and miles of mtb and gravel trails. No surprise it is also the location of the annual 200km Dirty Riever. A bit further north and you can explore the open trails of The Cheviots, or fancy going further afield.. the 136 mile C2C cycle route (aka Sea to Sea) will take you from the store across the country, although we will prefer you to go West to East so you can pop in for a slice of cake when you finish!
If watersports are more your thing the local rivers give access to some of the best open boat and whitewater kayaking in the country. The Tees and Tyne are particularly popular and reliable runs. With Tynemouth itself being a top local surf spot we will have to get Ronnie working on some board shorts for the range!
Sandstone is the local stone and the surrounding Northumberland moors are home to 'sudden and surprising crags'. Shaftoe Crags are just 40 minutes drive, a little further afield and you can get to Bowden Doors, Kyloe in the Woods.. in a good winter you can even find ice climbing and ski mountaineering in the Cheviots!
We know that's just scratching the surface and we are genuinely looking forward to acquainting ourselves much deeper, getting to know the local spots and meeting our local aktivist customers.
We are going to be recruiting, so if you fancy being part of this next step why not ping over your cv to firstname.lastname@example.org.
