Molecular Velcro

By Kenny Stocker

Boffins attached to Gecko technology. Last year we ran with an exploratory rock boot that we called the Tokay; after the cheeky gecko of the same name. The boot was comfy with sticky rubber that helped people scale smooth walls and amaze their friends. The rubber was sticky but nowhere near as adherent as real gecko feet. We had reached the end of our development cycle but the technical boffins at BAE have been taking it further in an attempt to create a molecular Velco. The material uses natural adhesion instead of glue to bond two surfaces together and just like our small friends the two surfaces can be easily pulled apart.
