3D Gamma SPECS

Alpkit has developed the first prototype of its S.P.E.C.S (Spatial Perspective Enhancement Clarity System). In layman's terms this will be the world's first commercially available 3D torch. For some years the American military have been developing a 3D viewing system but have concentrated their efforts on "Augmented Reality" using OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). Although this system will have powerful applications for both night and day, as the system will mix both real and generated displays, there is a much more accessible technology which Jim stumbled upon by accident. A couple of years back Jim was clearing out the loft and stumbled across a pair of those weird cardboard glasses with different colour lenses. At the time he didn't think much of it, it was just a another thing that cluttered up an already cluttered desk. A few weeks later though we were all in the office talking about the new Gamma headtorch we were about to launch and were cycling through the LED features. Red, green, flash, red, green, flash. Jim was looking straight through us not really listening while we explained what other features we might want on the forthcoming Gamma.


Anyway Jim spun round on his chair doing some weird Mr Miyagi impression, wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off. "Hey Jim what are you up to?" He turned round having found his cardboard specs. 10 mins later we had rewired a Gamma so that both the red and green stayed on at the same time. It didn't work at first but once we found the right filters there was no mistaking that we looking at a three dimensional image.


We still have some work to do but the testing that Shaggy did for us in Scotland and more importantly in Alaska show the validity of this product. Low light orientation is a must for micro navigation and anything that can aid terrain identification in difficult situations is definitely something we should work on. Only now with more powerful LED that can be fine tuned to the correct colour is real time 3D viewing a possibility. Jim has recently been working on a pair of diopter glasses with red and green filters as although standard sheet glasses work to some extent the red filter can become blurry because there is a 250 nanometer difference in the wave length between red and cyan lenses. The final product will still take a few months to perfect. The LED still need tweaking and we are currently waiting for Cree to release their next generation Xlamp, in the correct colour parameters.
