British bouldering championships 2011 report

By Dan Bradley

So it was an early start, I left Nottingham at 5.30am to go pick up Kenny, our aim was to get to London to watch the Nottingham Junior team in the British bouldering championships 2011.

The seniors comp had already taken place on Saturday with an excellent display of climbing on an OK comp wall, but visibly less impressive than the wall at last years Cliffhanger.

The junior team have been doing lots of training lately, albeit for rope climbing, but they always manage to sneak in a little bouldering most sessions. The categories for the BBCs are junior and senior unlike the Youth Climbing Series which is split across more age groups, so this was going to be a real test seeing as most of them entering are much younger than 16.

The day was split into boys and girls categories with the boys going first for a 2 hour session and then the girls starting theirs. After the qualification rounds a short break allowed the route setters time to change all the routes and prepare for the finals.

In the qualifiers it was only Sarah Pashley from Nottingham who managed to qualify for the finals finishing in 5th place overall. In the boys Billy Rydal was the sole Nottingham representative, and although he is still only 13 years old managed to finish in a respectable 12th position. The girls gave a good fight and managed to secure a 5th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 17th and 20th place.

Well done to all that entered. In the upcoming years we will be entering again, who knows, maybe there is a champion in there somewhere? All results for seniors and juniors are at the BMC website
